Key to Passing: Focus on Ball Control

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

Passing with Ball Control

Passing in volleyball requires a great deal of ball control over your body. Knowing how to absorb a fast-served ball using your body and being able to quickly push a slower, "free" ball to the setter are all part of the game. There are many moving parts to master in order to make your body do what you want it to when delivering the ball to the setter.

But before we dive into the technical aspects like platforms, angles, footwork, and specific movements, today will focus on improving your body control. Let’s work on understanding your reaction time and enhancing your ability to touch and handle the ball effectively. We will pay attention to how you visually track the ball as it approaches your platform and how the ball behaves when it makes contact with your arms.

Let's get started!

Passing with Ball Control Routine:

  1. Begin with a ball gripped in your hand.

  2. Initiate with some juggling – gracefully pass the ball back and forth between your arms a total of 10 times.

  3. Incorporate walking into the mix while passing the ball to yourself 10 times.

  4. Now, engage in side-to-side tosses and self-passes, executing them smoothly 10 times.

  5. Progress to backward tosses and self-passes, repeating the sequence 10 times.

  6. Iterate through this regimen three times for maximum benefit.

  7. Capture your passing ball control performance by taking out your phone and recording yourself.

  8. Commit this routine to memory for future practice and improvement.

Insider Tip:

When passing with ball control, try a unique approach to stand out. Rather than using the common calls like "I Go" or "Mine," which can blend in with your teammates, use your name. This way, everyone on the team will instantly recognize your intention to make the pass, and for recruitment considerations, your name will leave a lasting impression.

Snack:

By now, you should have had a good passing ball control workout and have broken a sweat. For your snack, it's a good idea to go for something heartier than just a piece of fruit. Consider enjoying a satisfying handful of cheese and crackers to replenish your energy.

Volleyball Stretching Routine:

During your dynamic volleyball stretching routine today, focus specifically on stretching your neck and back. The actions of constantly looking up at the ball and bending your back can create a heightened need for extra stretching in these areas.
