Jump Higher on Approach with Left Foot Plant

Updated: Sep 26, 2023

Left Foot Plant

I can't stop analyzing the technique in this video– there are so many remarkable aspects to it. Pay close attention to the left foot planting and jumping. The execution is truly fascinating! Take note of the approach's length, the swiftness of the footwork, the graceful movement of the back arms, the precise left foot planting just before the jump, the vertical lift (instead of a wide jump), the efficient mechanics of the left arm, the unwavering focus on the ball, and the way the player tucks her head. Please note it is always advisable for players to try and land on both feet to prevent injuries. Having pointed that out, this approach incorporates numerous outstanding elements that make it a joy to study and learn from.

Let's get to work with the Coachable Left-Foot Plant Drill...

Left-Foot Plant Drill:

Objective: This at-home drill focuses on refining the volleyball approach, emphasizing the left-foot plant for jumping. Focus on the length of your approach, swift footwork, fluid back arm movement, precise left-foot planting, vertical jump, efficient left arm mechanics, and proper head tucking. Safety is also a priority, so I always recommend athletes to always attempt to land on both feet to prevent injuries.

Materials Needed:

  • Volleyball (if available)

  • Space to move (living room, backyard, etc.)

Instructions:

  • Warm-up: Start with a light warm-up to prepare your body for the drill. Perform dynamic stretches and some light jogging in place.

  • Set Up: Find a suitable space in your home where you can practice your approach without obstructions.

  • Approach Length: Begin by practicing the length of your approach. Mark a starting point and a spot where you want to plant your left foot for the jump. This should be about 3-4 steps apart, depending on your skill level.

  • Footwork and Back Arm Movement: Execute a series of approaches, focusing on the swiftness and coordination of your footwork. Simultaneously, pay attention to the graceful movement of your back arms. Keep your arms bent at a 90-degree angle during the approach.

  • Precise Left-Foot Plant: Concentrate on planting your left foot precisely at the designated spot just before the jump. Ensure that your foot placement is consistent.

  • Vertical Lift: Instead of a broad jump, work on jumping vertically. Imagine there's a string pulling you straight up as you jump off your left foot.

  • Efficient Left Arm Mechanics: Pay attention to the mechanics of your left arm. Keep it high, close to your shoulder, and ready to guide your swing.

  • Ball Focus: Place an object (a ball or any small item) on the wall where you'll make your approach. Keep your eyes locked on this object as you approach, ensuring unwavering focus. Try to not look at the ground. In the game you glance at your blockers and then keep your eye on the ball.

  • Head Tuck: As you jump, practice tucking your head slightly to align your body and maintain control during the jump.

  • Safe Landing: Always prioritize safety. After each jump, try to land on both feet to prevent injuries. Work on your balance and stability during landings.

  • Repetitions: Repeat this drill for at least 10-15 repetitions, paying close attention to each element of the approach.

  • Cool Down: Finish your practice with some light stretching to maintain flexibility and prevent muscle soreness.

By regularly practicing this at-home drill, you'll enhance your volleyball approach, ensuring that you plant your left foot correctly and incorporate all the crucial elements while minimizing the risk of injury with a focus on safe landings.

Coachable Tip:

Planting your left foot strategically will enhance your vertical leap and enable you to execute dynamic mid-air rotations, harnessing additional rotational power when connecting with the ball. By incorporating this crucial element into your approach, you can expect a remarkable surge in your hitting performance.

Snack:

My snack suggestion for today: Frozen Grapes.

Volleyball Stretching Routine:

In today's dynamic volleyball stretching routine, focus your attention on a crucial element: stretching your knees. Yes, your knees. Begin by gently grasping one leg behind your thigh with your hands. Elevate your leg into the air while keeping your foot flexed. Aim to straighten the leg as much as possible without locking the knee. Hold this stretch, return to the initial position, and then replicate the process with your other leg.
