This critical technique plays a pivotal role in generating momentum for a swifter arm swing, allowing you to harness the full power from your back to complete your swing with maximum force.

Let's get to work with the Coachable Left Arm Mechanics Drill...


Left Arm Mechanics Drill:

Objective: To improve the fundamental mechanics of the hitter's left arm, emphasizing the correct follow-through motion across the belly button. This drill will help generate momentum for a faster arm swing and maximize the power from the back during the swing.


Materials Needed:

  • Volleyball (if available)

  • Wall (or any flat vertical surface)

Instructions:

  • Warm-up: Begin with a light warm-up to prepare your body for the drill. Perform some stretching exercises and shoulder rotations to prevent injuries.

  • Find Your Practice Space: Locate a wall or any flat vertical surface in your home, preferably one with enough space to practice your swing safely.

  • Position Yourself: Stand about 5-6 feet away from the wall, facing it. Assume your volleyball hitting stance, with your knees slightly bent, feet shoulder-width apart, and your non-dominant hand (left hand for right-handed hitters) held up and ready to guide your swing.

  • Focus on the Left Arm: Concentrate on your left arm, which is crucial for this drill. As you prepare to swing, ensure that your left arm starts high, close to your shoulder, and slightly bent at the elbow.

  • Swing and Follow-Through: Execute a controlled volleyball swing, imagining you are hitting the ball against the wall. Pay close attention to your left arm's motion during and after the swing. Emphasize the following points:

    1. Swing Through the Ball: Swing your dominant arm (right arm for right-handed hitters) forward, making contact with the imaginary ball on the wall.

    2. Follow Through to Your Belly Button: After the hit, extend your left arm across your body, finishing its motion across your belly button. This is the critical technique we're working on.

    3. Repeat: Practice this motion several times, focusing on the proper left arm follow-through.

  • Visualize the Ball: While hitting an imaginary ball against the wall, visualize the ball's trajectory, imagining that you are hitting it over the net or to a specific target on the wall.

  • Repetitions: Perform this drill for 10-15 repetitions or until you feel confident in your left arm follow-through technique.

By regularly practicing this at-home drill, you'll develop a more effective left arm follow-through, enhancing your overall hitting mechanics and power on the volleyball court.

To master the crucial left arm follow-through technique, think of your left arm as a whip cracking through the air. As you analyze your form, envision that your left arm's motion is what propels the whip's crack. The snap at the end of the whip symbolizes the explosive power you can generate by ensuring your left arm finishes its motion across your belly button. This mental imagery will help you prioritize this fundamental mechanic and boost the momentum in your swing, ultimately allowing your back to deliver its maximum power for a forceful hit.
