Anonymous Question from a Parent:

"Ok, we’re starting to formulate emails for my daughter’s college recruiting process. What are the most important sites she should be on? Where do we start with this process? I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but I’m here for it!"

My Response:

Don't do this work for your daughter—this is her journey. Encourage her to spend an hour each night working on her dream, taking ownership of her future and the steps needed to make it a reality.

Step 1: Do Your Research

Before you start emailing college coaches, it’s essential to understand where you want to go and why. This process involves more than just volleyball; it’s about finding the right fit for your academic, athletic, and personal goals. PrepDig+ offers a comprehensive college database to help you get started.

Academic Fit First: Begin by researching schools that align with your academic interests and aspirations. These are the institutions that will set you up for success both on and off the court. Think about the type of academic environment that will help you thrive.

Volleyball Program Fit: Once you’ve narrowed down your academic choices, focus on their volleyball programs. Consider the level of play, team dynamics, coaching styles, and what kind of experience the program offers. Ask yourself: Does this program provide the opportunity to grow as both a player and a person?

Location & Campus Culture: Don’t forget about campus culture and location. Is this a place where you’ll thrive socially and emotionally? While volleyball is a huge part of your life, the connections you make and the environment you immerse yourself in are just as important. The campus vibe will play a big role in your overall college experience.

Once you’ve done your research, you’re ready to move on to Step 2: crafting your email strategy and starting to build meaningful connections with college coaches.

Step 2: Crafting the Email

A well-crafted email strategy is key for players aiming to play at the next level. Here’s how to ensure your emails stand out:

Research & Personalization: You’ve already done your homework—now it’s time to show it. Create a targeted list of schools that fit your academic, athletic, and geographic preferences. Personalize each email to the specific coach and program. Coaches don’t have time to read generic emails, so make sure your message is tailored. Show them why their program interests you and how you would contribute to their team.Tip: Never send templated emails or use the same thread for multiple coaches. Each email should be unique, individualized, and direct.

Clear, Concise Email Structure: Your email should be clear, direct, and easy to read. Here’s a structure to follow:

  • Subject Line: Be specific (e.g., “2025, 6’1” MB/RS – Highlight Reel Update”).

  • Introduction: Begin with key details—graduation year, height, high school, club team, and position.

  • Academic & Athletic Info: Include your GPA, test scores, and notable volleyball achievements, like showcases, awards, or key stats. Briefly explain why you’re interested in their program and how you’d contribute to their team.

  • Highlight Video: Always include a link to a short, well-edited highlight reel. This is your opportunity to showcase your skills. You can attach a player profile with game film and detailed stats or provide a link to your Player Prospect Index for a more comprehensive view. With PrepDig+, you’ll receive a notification when a coach views your profile.

  • Upcoming Events: Mention any upcoming tournaments, showcases, or games where the coach can see you play live or virtually. If you’re looking for showcases, PrepDig+ has two upcoming events in California on 11/30/2024 and 12/7/2024.

Step 3: Character Matters

Create a Professional Email Address:Avoid casual or nickname-based email addresses. Instead, use something simple and professional, like firstname.lastname.gradyear@domain.com. This shows that you take the process seriously.

Timing is Everything:

  • Start Early: Begin emailing coaches during your freshman year and continue throughout your sophomore year. By your junior year, you should have a clearer sense of which schools are genuinely interested. If you’re not receiving responses by then, it may be time to reevaluate both your options and your approach.

  • Know the NCAA Recruiting Calendar: Familiarize yourself with key recruiting dates and the specific windows when coaches can contact you. PrepDig+ offers resources, like the NCAA Recruiting Calendar, to help you time your email strategy and align with these important windows.

Ignite Your Email Game This Season

As you gear up for club season, make sure your email strategy is just as sharp as your on-court skills. By researching schools, personalizing your emails, and maintaining a consistent approach, you’ll set yourself apart and hopefully catch the eye of college coaches. With the resources from Coachable247 Playbook and PrepDig+ backing you, you’ll be well-prepared to take control of your volleyball future—so make it count!
