Disguised Back Dump
The setter back dump is a blend of disguise, precise timing, strategic placement, and finesse. When the setter becomes an offensive option, it introduces a heightened layer of complexity for the opposing defense. Leveraging the setter dump is not only an option but a strategic imperative throughout the game, particularly when facilitated by an exceptional pass.

Let's get to work with the Coachable Disguised Dump Drill...
Coachable Disguised Dump Drill:
This drill focuses on perfecting the setter’s back dump technique with an emphasis on disguise, wrist motion, precise timing, and strategic ball placement. It allows players to practice without a partner and helps develop muscle memory for effective dumps.
Materials Needed:
Volleyball
Wall
Marking tape or chalk
Cones (optional)
Instructions:
Wrist Motion Warm-up: Begin with a wrist motion warm-up. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, without a ball, and practice the wrist motion for the back dump. Emphasize the rotation of the left wrist and maintain the right hand in a setting position.
Marking Spot on Wall: Using marking tape or chalk, mark a spot on the wall at a height of 10 feet. This spot will be the target for your dump practice. Ensure the mark is visible and easily distinguishable.
Setting Position Practice: Stand parallel to the wall, with your hands raised in a setting position. Focus on keeping your right hand elevated, ready for a set. Practice maintaining this position as you go through the dump motion with your left hand.
Marked Spot Setting: Stand parallel to the wall at a distance where you can comfortably set the ball to the marked spot. Practice setting the ball to the mark using both hands.
Dump Practice: Take two steps forward, maintaining the same parallel position to the wall. Now, with the ball in hand, execute the dump using only your left hand. Keep the right hand elevated in the setting position. Aim to hit the marked spot consistently. Repeat this motion to develop precision and control.
Variation with Movement: Introduce lateral movement into the drill. Take steps to the left and right while practicing the dump. This simulates real-game scenarios where the setter may need to dump the ball while on the move. Focus on maintaining the disguise and accuracy in hitting the spot.
Increase Difficulty: Challenge yourself by increasing the distance from the wall and incorporating cones on the ground to create a specific landing zone for the dumped ball.
Visualization Exercise: Close the session with a visualization exercise. Stand in front of the marked spot, visualize the wall and your hands in the setting position, and mentally go through the dump motion. Envision hitting the target accurately.
Cool Down: Finish the drill with a cool-down routine that includes stretching for the wrists, shoulders, and overall body.
This drill can be performed regularly to refine the setter's back dump technique, focusing on disguise, precise timing, strategic placement, and finesse.
Coachable Tip:
Incorporate a 'Triple Threat' Mindset: The setter's back dump is not just a move; it's a strategic mindset that demands a triple threat approach. First, master the disguise—make your intentions elusive by mirroring your setting motion for both sets and dumps. Second, impeccable timing is your ally; watch the opponent's blockers, wait for that crucial moment when they commit to your hitter, and exploit the gap. Third, strategic placement is key; visualize the court, identify the weak zones, and craftily deposit the ball where the defense is least prepared. Combine these elements with finesse, and your back dump becomes a game-changer, turning you into a dynamic offensive threat. Remember, it's not just an option; it's a strategic imperative, especially when paired with an exceptional pass. The complexity it adds to your team's offense is your secret weapon—use it wisely.
Snack:
My snack suggestion for today: Cheese and Crackers.
Volleyball Stretching Routine:
In today's dynamic volleyball stretching routine, focus your attention on a crucial element: stretching your arms and wrists. Yes, your wrists. Bend your wrist, pointing your hand toward the floor. With your other hand, gently bend your wrist farther until you feel a mild to moderate stretch in your forearm. Hold for at least 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat 2 to 4 times.
