D2 or Junior College: Which Path Opens More Doors to D1 Volleyball

Anonymous Question from an Athlete:

"I was wondering if D1 college coaches recruit more from D2 schools or from junior colleges?"

My Response:

When considering whether D2 or junior college is a better path to eventually transfer to a D1 program, I’d encourage you to reframe the question slightly. Instead of focusing on D1 potential right now, think about where you’ll have the best immediate experience both academically and athletically: a D2 school or a junior college.

Here’s why this perspective is important:

  • Regulations and Staff Preferences Change: Recruiting strategies vary year to year based on NCAA regulations and individual coaching staff preferences. A D1 program might prefer pulling from D2 schools one year, and junior colleges the next, especially if there’s a coaching change at that school.

  • The Journey Matters: While having big dreams is fantastic, your success will largely depend on where you can thrive now. Ask yourself where you’ll have the best opportunities to play, grow, and balance academics and volleyball. Consistently starting and excelling in a strong program—whether at a D2 or junior college—will always help you stand out to future recruiters.

Ultimately, the "better move" will depend on where you feel the most supported and challenged in this next phase of your journey. Start building relationships with programs at both levels, and keep in mind that what works for one coaching staff may not work for another. By focusing on the immediate impact of your choice, you’ll set yourself up for success and keep the door open for your long-term goals.
