Understanding Defensive Block Coverage

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

Block Coverage

When you reach the top level, the game becomes more about blocking and block coverage then one would think. Somehow the defensive middles really start to understand their timing and reading the sets. As a hitter, the days of hitting the seam or battling a solo blocker become much less. You go from your libero calling, “angle” to now hearing “tool.”

This shift in game play makes block coverage a necessary skill to master. Coverage is the responsibility of everyone on the team. The setter must train diligently to resist admiring their own set and promptly transition into coverage mode. Hitters must be prepared to make a quick defensive play if the ball unexpectedly falls into their territory. Left-back players shadow the outside hitter along the line, middle-back positions are ready to chase down high deflections from the block, right-back players hold position around the 10-foot line, and middle-front players smoothly transition from their attacking approach to defensive coverage. And that is just the coverage for the outside hitter. Each hitter has their own system of coverage. It may seem like a lot, and it certainly is. Coverage is all about rapid, instinctive reactions to the ball.

Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get started:

Block Coverage Drill:

Grab a volleyball, and perform the following exercises 10 times each:

  1. Pass the ball into a wall without allowing it to bounce.

  2. Execute right-arm passes into a wall without any bouncing.

  3. Repeat with left-arm passes into a wall.

  4. Set the ball against a wall.

  5. Pass, set to yourself, and down ball into a wall, receiving it cleanly.

As you go through this block coverage drill, record your performance to track your progress.

Insider Tip:

Always embrace the hustle to reach your block coverage spot and be poised to react swiftly. Focus your attention on reading the blocker's arm movements; this will provide valuable insights into the trajectory of the ball off the block.

Snack:

After a productive session, reward yourself with a guilt-free treat—some cinnamon graham crackers, minus the chocolate and marshmallow. Savor the simplicity.

Volleyball Stretching Routine:

During today's dynamic volleyball stretching routine, pay special attention to elongating and loosening your hamstrings. Your legs have worked hard, and they deserve some care.
